Recent Work

I create vibrant, large scale and bold paintings of botanicals, people, and animals. Throughout my work, I seek to preserve a sense of wonder at the stubborn beauty of our world. Contemplating what is overlooked has shown me that the extraordinary is often hidden in plain sight. The microcosm reveals the macrocosm, and the Sacred lurks within the ordinary. My fruit paintings, for example, are meditations on time: the circular bowl holding the fruit suggests the circle of life.

I am in awe of color and its ability to suggest emotion through temperature and value. I eliminate much of the detail in the service of color and shape, allowing the juiciness of my brushstrokes to convey the joy of the tactile. Breaking the surface of the painting into fragments evokes my admiration for stained glass, kintsugi pottery and quilting. Like these art forms, the integrated whole made up of broken pieces is worth more than the original material.
