Protect Our Legacy Forests
Dear Friends,
Today I had a quiet moment before the Thanksgiving rush so I wrote a letter to our Department of Natural Resources. They are actively auctioning off legacy forests to be cut down for timber before our new Public Lands Commissioner, Dave Upthegrove takes office. Legacy Forests differ from the typical monocrop timber forest in that they are biodiverse and take 100 years or more to grow. Please learn more and sign a petition to protect our Legacy Forests at https://www.wlfdc.org/.
Dear DNR Board Members,
I urge you to stop the sale of legacy forests and to delay all auctioning of legacy forests until the new Commissioner of Public Land is installed. As you know, 2023 was the hottest year in recorded human history. Legacy forests keep our state cool and oxygen-rich, and prevent wildfires, drought, and flooding. In addition, legacy forests provide a host of other benefits including resilience to pests, preservation of rare species of animals and plants, and quality of life for our children and grandchildren. Today on Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the gift of Creation, and the great calling we have from our Creator to care for our earthly home.
